MPI Seeing Surge in Auto Insurance Fraud

September 9, 2020 12:05 PM | News

Manitoba Public Insurance (BOCKSTAEL CONSTRUCTION)

WINNIPEG — Manitoba Public Insurance is seeing a surge in automobile insurance fraud — nearly triple from this time last year.

“This increase is partially attributed to MPI’s refocused effort in reviewing suspicious cases,” says Curtis Wennberg, vice-president, customer service and COO.

MPI says as of the end of July 2020, 88 charges against 33 people have been laid, compared to 30 charges against 10 people in 2019.

“In addition, MPI has adopted a business change to emphasize that insurance fraud is a “crime” and pursue both a denial of coverage and charges going forward.”

Wennberg says the files are forwarded to the provincial prosecution office for review after extensive investigations are completed.

Charges can vary from making a false statement, or fraud over/under $5,000.

“Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime and this criminal activity affects honest Manitobans through

Gulf Countries Have Not Paid the Aid Money They Pledged to Yemen

The UN has named and shamed Saudi Arabia and two other Gulf kingdoms for not fulfilling funding pledges to help Yemen, where the impact of the devastating Saudi-backed war has now led to one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the world.

Saudi Arabia, which supports Yemen’s government against the country’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, hosted a high-level UN donor pledging conference in June to help Yemen deal with its humanitarian crisis, pledging $500 million of a total $3.4 billion in funds.

This week, however, both UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the UN’s humanitarian chief, Mark Lowcock, publicly noted that Riyadh has not yet sent a single cent to the relief effort. The United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, which also pledged significant amounts of money, have not delivered either.

“More than 9 million people have been affected by deepening cuts to aid programmes, including food, water and healthcare. Continuing to hold

M&M’s opening more stores amid retail industry struggles

Candy stores are making a comeback.

Mars Retail Group announced Thursday it would expand M&M’s candy stores throughout the U.S. and internationally by 2021 amid a string of store closings elsewhere in retail.

M&M’s stores will open at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida; Mall of America in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and in the European market in Berlin, Germany, the company said.

“The candy aisle in a supermarket hasn’t really ever changed,” Patrick McIntyre, director of global retail at Mars Retail Group, told FOX Business. “There is a role brands need to play to bring it to life outside of that aisle, which is why these M&M’s stores are so important.”

The new M&M experiential stores will have a wall of
